Saharan Salt Blocks

Carved from dry salt beds in the Sahara Desert, these massive blocks are carried out by camel trains to be sold in local markets, a practice that dates back ten centuries. The strands of goat leather wrapped and knotted around and through each block served to stabilize them in transit across the desert.
