Mark Davies: Artifice Black For General Public

Language has long been a fascination for Mark Davies, and in Artifice words are the subject. The artist layers text in white caulking, words one on top of another. In doing so, they become abstract, almost sculptural, as if rising off the canvas. Obscured, the text takes on a different form and meaning, playing with light and shadow to create a visual story, one that cannot be read in the traditional sense, but must be absorbed through the viewer's eyes.

General Public, an art curation and publishing company based in LA, is revolutionizing the way we think about and collect art. Founded by Portia de Rossi, a collector and art world disruptor, General Public makes a radical proposition: a painting shouldn't be enjoyed by just one person, but should be available to all. The General Public Synograph™, a groundbreaking 3-D technology, redefines the limits of printing, recreating every detail of the original artwork with total fidelity. Capturing the nuances of brushwork and technique, these textured prints are an authentic expression of the artist's hand.
